The Zen Accountant

Have you defined your success?

Hello and welcome to the second part in my series of blogs on helping you take a step back and focus on the bigger picture in your life and in your business.

Today, I want to talk about the fundamentals of why you are in business, or why you choose to do what you do, and how it's important you define what is business success to you.

Deciding what's important

It's best to start with what matters to you the most in your business and work, and that is a very personal question. We all value things differently, for some they value most the independence of being their own boss, while some are more excited about the increased potential for personal achievement by running their own business.

You've really got to start with why, every thing else that follows is built on this core fundamental proposition.

Life is never stagnation. It is a constant movement, unrhythmic movement, as well as constant change. Things live by moving and gain strength as they go.

In reality, our business success fits very closely within our goals for what we want to achieve in our life. For a simple guide on getting started with your life goals I'd recommend starting here, Zen Habits is a fantastic resource for all things Zen, and I'd fully recommend signing up to Leo's blog.

Once you know what you want to achieve, you know how your business fits in, and then why it is important to you. Once you've got this fixed in your mind, I've got three key questions for you to consider, and when you answer these I want you to grade these on a scale of 1-10:

  • How important is feeling in control of your business destiny to you?

  • How proud of your business are you at the moment?

  • How financially successful do you feel your business is right now?

I'd be surprised at this point if nothing had piqued your interest, and you didn't have anything in mind that you're considering following up on.

Before you do anything though, it's first important to identify your key drivers to future success, so you know where your efforts are best focused, which is something I'll be covering in the next blog of The Zen Accountant.

If this blog has made you think of anything you'd like to chat about in the meantime, then just drop us an e-mail at friends@mrandmrsaccountant, or give us a ring on 01924 666432, and I'd be happy to discuss anything that's on your mind and help you identify the best steps forward.

Thanks for reading, I'm Thomas Szczepanski, Master Accountant.
